McHenry Country Prairie Trail
This 25.9 - mile trail stretches from Kane County line in Algonquin
to the Wisconsin state border
Parking is available at the Lorraine Drive Parking Area (north of Rt. 176 off of
Lorraine Dr.); the Main Street Parking Area (west of Main Street and south of
Rt. 14); another lot located east of Pyott Rd. off of Virginia Rd.; and in
Algonquin, off of Meyer Dr., which connects to Algonquin Rd.
Fel-Pro RRR
MCCD, The Nature Conservancy and Metropolitan Family Service jointly
manage this 220-acre site, a gift from the PelPro families. Located in
Cary, approximately 75-acres contains recreational facilities while the
remaining 145 acres are dedicated to a wilderness area.
The Hollows
The 346-acre site is on the west side of Cary, adjacent to Route
14. It includes Lake Atwood, a popula location for anglers, picnic areas,
hiking trails and a group campground.
Hickory Grove
This 274-acre conservation area, bounded on its northeast corner by
the Fox River, hosts a diversity of habitats which serve as a refuge for
northern Illinois wildlife. The Hickory Grove Riverfront serves as an
ideal fishing area. Other amenities available include: two picnic
pavilions, hiking and equestrian trails and the Living Land Farm which offers
environmental education programs. This conservation area is accessed from
Hickory Nut grove Rd., Cary.
Lyons Prairie & Marsh
Four hundred and forty acres of prairie and marsh habitat offers
opportunities for outdoor fun. Access to this area is off of Hickory Nut
Grove Road.
Prairieview Education Center
Prairieview is open daily with season hours and located off of Route
176 on Behan Road, Crystal Lake.
